Haan Museum VIRTUAL EXHIBIT: On the Shoulders of Ancestors: The Art of Willis Bing Davis
<p>On the Shoulders of Ancestors: The Art of Willis Bing Davis The Haan Museum of Indiana Art is proud to introduce a new virtual exhibition featuring the artwork of Willis "Bing" Davis. "Bing" Davis grew up in a neighborhood where there was a sense of community, where everyone knew who you were, and where great role models made a positive impact on the lives of its residents. While embracing his African-American heritage and culture, Davis creates thought provoking artwork that interweaves native patterns and fabrics and gives a new voice to found objects. Ceramic Ancestral Spirit Vases, masks, paintings and many other ceramic pieces showcase the talent and versatility of this prolific artist. Through his art, he inspires the viewer to explore their human potential and greatness. *This virtual exhibition was re-created from its original exhibition and booklet featured in-house at the Haan Museum of Indiana Art in 2017.</p>

Virtual 18th Annual Zoo Run Run 5K
<p>The Columbian Park Zoo has announced that its 18th annual Zoo Run Run 5K run/walk will go virtual this year. Participants can complete the walk/run anytime between July 24 and August 24, 2020. The decision to move the race to a virtual format was made in an effort to prioritize the community’s health and safety during the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>
<p><br />“Zoo Run Run has become a favorite community tradition, so it was really important to us to find a way to make it work this year,” said Neil Dale, Zoo Director. “We decided that a virtual race was a smart compromise, that way, participants can avoid large crowds and safely complete the race on their own time.”</p>
<p><br />Online registration is available at zoorunrun.itsyourrace.com. Registration is $20 per person and includes a collectible Zoo Run Run t-shirt, certificates for top finishers, and opportunities to win prizes along the way. Online registration is available until Friday, August 21 at 11:59pm. Participants can download the IYR Virtual Mobile App and automatically track pace, distance, and overall time. The app is designed to recognize the race distance and automatically submit finish times. Racers also have the option to manually enter finish times, if they so choose.</p>

Art in the Park: Carnival Night
<p>Our last Art in the Park event for Summer 2020 will be on August 4th!Since 2014, the City of Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department has provided a unique art experience through our Art in the Park festival series on Memorial Island, within historic Columbian Park in Lafayette. Art in the Park festivals showcase local and regional fine arts and crafts, live art (including dance and improv comedy), music from local talent, a variety of foods from various vendors, and fun activities for the entire family.We are looking for a variety of businesses and individuals to fill our vendor slots for the 2020 Art in the Park series. Food vendors, artists and crafters, musical talent, and performance artists are needed! If interested, please email artinthepark@lafayette.in.gov.*** We will make updates to this event as we confirm live music selections as well as food and art vendors.</p>

Artists' Own Exhibit: Detrit- US by Tracy Smoll
<p><span style="caret-color: #000000; color: #000000; font-family: -webkit-standard; font-size: medium; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none; display: inline !important; float: none;">Tracy Smoll lives in West Lafayette and is currently an MFA Candidate at Purdue University. She is a second year student in Studio Arts with a specialization in Ceramics. Much of her work is based on the idea that detritus in a neighborhood tells a story, particularly at this point in history referred to as the Anthropocene, the first geological age in which humans are dominant forces on the climate and environment. The waste is a narrative of anxiety or security, abundance or deficit, the superfluous or only the necessary. Smoll maps neighborhoods, collects detritus on daily walks and documents her findings. Identifying as a research artist, her process also includes sketching and researching her findings before using primarily natural materials to create her work. It was in this way that she noticed the ash borer beetles destroying many trees on the Happy Hollow Park trail. The beautiful bark that comes from these invasive, human-transported beetles was inspiration for her large wood, pastel and charcoal works.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> <br /></span></span></p>
